At 14, Earle left home for Houston to stay with his uncle, Nick Fain, who encouraged him to continue playing guitar. Soon after, Earle met hard-living songwriter Townes Van Zandt, who inspired him to make music his career. After combating personal demons and serving some time in jail he began to play again. Earle started releasing more innovative records, which included more ardently political protest tunes . A long-time anti-death penalty demonstrator, Steve started working his politics into his music. He's now hailed as one of the most fantastic forces in the alt country world.
